Big changes coming for Harambee Stars

Kenya lay foundations for AFCON 2027 return after long absence
Football Kenya Federation FKF president Hussein Mohammed has revealed detailed plan aimed at ensuring the Harambee Stars are fully prepared for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations which Kenya will co-host alongside Uganda & Tanzania.
The Harambee Stars last featured at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2019 when the tournament was held in Egypt.
Drawn into tough Group C alongside Senegal, Algeria and Tanzania, Kenya finished third after registering one win.
A dramatic 3-2 victory over regional rivals Tanzania and two defeat against eventual champions Algeria & finalists Senegal.
That group-stage exit marked Kenya’s most recent AFCON appearance and FKF president believes the upcoming edition presents opportunity to write new chapter.
Speaking during the Donholm Seniors Gala Night at Weston Hotel in Nairobi, the FKF president confirmed that high-profile international friendly matches will be staged in Kenya as part of the build-up.
“We are preparing for AFCON 2027 so there is a lot to look forward to,” Hussein Mohammed said. “We will bring competitive friendlies for the Harambee Stars back home. We want them played here on home soil so we give fans experience they’ve never had before.”
He added that 2026 will be pivotal year for Kenyan football, both on and off the pitch.
With AFCON 2027 on the horizon, Kenya is steadily laying the foundations.. from infrastructure and fan engagement to national team rebuilding.
