While seeing out the first half of England's game against Latvia, Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa was shielding out a ball for a throw. The center-back pulled up and needed to exit the field after replays showed that the attacker had stepped on his Achilles.
Starting in the back four for the second match in a row for Thomas Tuchel, the AVFC defender had another good showing in front of Jordan Pickford. While his partners against Latvia and Albania seemed to have been less confident compared to him at times.
Konsa managed to return, and the unchanged Tuchel side started off the second half as he had lined the Three Lions up to start the World Cup qualifier. With a steady presence back there and distributing the ball quickly when it entered his feet, his play gave fans a good impression of his capabilities.
The moment toward the end of the half with the CB grasping toward his heel area did provide a moment for AVFC fans to collectively hold their breath. As he had all game long, though, Konsa found himself continuing to have an excellent display, even feeling lively enough to join in the attack at times, particularly on set pieces.
Playing for one's national team is always an honor. It's hard to blame athletes or be upset when they eagerly accept a call-up, particularly for teams like England, where there is a lot of top competition for the few roster spots.
That being said, however, there is always a concern that someone will pick up a knock, or worse, potentially while away from the club. The positives mostly outweigh the potential negatives, though, and seeing Villa personnel perform for their countries is usually a welcome sight. Aston Villa fans were happy to see that nothing more serious happened to one of the best defenders as Konsa continued to battle on.
