Sunderland have sent Arthur Masuaku on loan to RC Lens for the remainder of the 2025/26 season after limited minutes in his first six months.

Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman said Masuaku wants more minutes after returning from international duty, and with strong depth in his position the loan suits both player and club. He wished Masuaku well at Lens and praised Dan Neil’s legacy and leadership as the midfielder embarks on his own loan.

Lens remain in the Ligue 1 title race with PSG. Masuaku joined Sunderland as a free agent on a two-year deal in the summer but struggled for regular action, with Reinildo established as first choice at right-back.

Dennis Cirkin returned strongly from long-term injury while Masuaku was at the Africa Cup of Nations with DR Congo. Further left back cover from Trai Hume, Lutsharel Geertruida and Luke O’Nien helped clear a path for the 32-year-old to depart.

The move takes Sunderland back to their full quota of six international loans, so they cannot send any more players abroad on short-term deals. Milan Aleksic was recalled from Polish club Cracovia to facilitate the switch and, having already played for two clubs this season, cannot feature for another team.

Masuaku is the second loan exit of the day, following Dan Neil’s move to Ipswich Town. Neil will leave as a free agent in the summer when his contract expires.
