Leeds United signed off at Elland Road with a 1-0 win over Brighton, Dominic Calvert-Lewin pouncing deep into added time after Jan Paul van Hecke’s back-pass error, rounding Bart Verbruggen to score.
The victory moved Leeds to 47 points and up to 14th. Daniel Farke’s depleted side kept their Champions League-chasing visitors at arm’s length as Brighton snatched at openings. yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk points out three key conclusions from a superb finale.
Farke called this the most difficult week for injuries, having been without Jayden Bogle, Gabriel Gudmundsson, Ilia Gruev, Noah Okafor and Facundo Buonanotte against Tottenham, then losing Pascal Struijk mid-game and Ethan Ampadu to illness before Brighton. Ampadu, a major doubt after missing Friday training, started and completed 90 minutes, made a goal-saving clearance and controlled his area. His influence again underlined his importance.
World Cup selection sits 24 days away and fitness scares emerged for two Leeds hopefuls. Brenden Aaronson went off with a dead leg midway through the second half, and Anton Stach was stretchered off after landing awkwardly from an aerial duel with Carlos Baleba.
Farke said an opponent came down on Stach’s knee or ankle and that the midfielder tried to continue but the pain was too much. He hoped it would not be serious with the World Cup close, while stressing they must await medical assessment of an ankle problem.
With Thomas Tuchel assessing England options, Calvert-Lewin and Danny Welbeck started level on 13 Premier League goals. Welbeck had moments before departing on 64 minutes, one effort brilliantly prevented by Ampadu. Calvert-Lewin now has 14, three in his last three, surpassing Welbeck and drawing level with Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins ahead of Friday’s squad announcement.
