First called up in 2011, he made his senior debut that year at 21 against Spain, a 1-0 win, playing five minutes.

The Sheffield United academy graduate played for Tottenham and Manchester City before joining Burnley. He featured at three European Championships, in 2016, 2021 and 2024, losing two finals, and at two World Cups in 2018 and 2022.

A summer signing for Burnley, he has not been selected since a friendly against Senegal on 10 June 2025, which finished 1-3. In his message, he thanked team-mates, staff and supporters for their support.
