Kylian Mbappé’s (27) final year at Paris Saint-Germain was a tumultuous one. The France captain started it completely ostracised from the first-team set-up and ended it leaving on a free transfer, making his dream move to Real Madrid.

Whilst it was a season that ended with silverware, with PSG wrapping up the Coupe de France and the Ligue 1 title, it is one that also ended with regrets. The club were well-positioned in the UEFA Champions League but lost their semi-final tie to Borussia Dortmund.

And on an individual level, Mbappé has regrets too. The Frenchman worked with Luis Enrique for just one season, but he has told The Bridge that he doesn’t think that he made the most of the one year he spent with the Spaniard.

“He is a really good manager. I had him in my last year (at PSG), so I couldn’t make the most of it,” began Mbappé, who evoked his time spent in the ‘loft’ with Les Parisiens. “For the first month (of Luis Enrique’s reign), I was in the loft. I came back, I told myself: ‘I have the sword of Damocles hanging over my head. At any moment, they’re going to cut off my head, so I might leave again.’ Then I made the decision to leave, and so in the last three or four months, he kept me just for the Champions League,” added Mbappé.

However, that strategy did not pay off, and the now-Real Madrid forward admitted to his head being elsewhere. “I was half-thinking about Madrid at that point. As a player, I didn’t make the most of Luis Enrique,” he said.
