Kylian Mbappé has been diagnosed with a lesion of the left semitendinosus muscle, the club said in a statement on Monday, after he went off late in Real Madrid's 1-1 draw with Real Betis on Friday.
The 27-year-old forward was substituted in the 81st minute with hamstring discomfort. He underwent an ultrasound on Saturday that did not show a serious injury, then had an MRI on Monday.
Madrid did not provide a specific timescale for his return. The announcement rules out the scenario of a serious hamstring injury that had been feared as he left the pitch.
Mbappé has been heavily used this season, with 41 appearances in all competitions for the Merengues. He will now follow an adapted treatment programme.
With about six weeks until the World Cup, from 11 June to 19 July, and Real having nothing left to play for, he could yet sit out the rest of the season.
