An effigy of Kylian Mbappé was burnt during Paraguay’s San Juan festivities, days after he scored the winner in France’s 1-0 World Cup last-16 victory over Paraguay on Saturday.
According to L'Équipe, the France captain has since become the target of criticism and attacks in Paraguay following that match.
The San Juan celebrations are hugely popular in the country, and at one event a doll in Mbappé’s likeness was completely burned, with footage spreading widely on social media.
Some participants depicted him as the most disliked person in the country during the festivities.
Sports minister Marina Ferrari responded on X, condemning the scenes. She argued that a sporting defeat does not justify violence, that sport carries values of respect, and that it must never be used as a pretext for such acts.
