A stellar first season in the Spanish capital for Kylian Mbappé (26) has not gone unnoticed by his club. The France captain was named Real Madrid’s Player of the Season on Wednesday, following a campaign in which he scored 42 goals, whilst also registering four assists in 55 matches across all competitions.
Mbappé, who also took home the European Golden Shoe Award for top goalscorer in Europe this season, reacted to being awarded the prize. “It’s a pleasure and a great moment for me. I would like to thank all the Madridistas who voted for me. It was my first season in Spain, a new experience as a player and as a person, and I’m very happy to be here,” he said.
Mbappé follows in the footsteps of Jude Bellingham (21) and Vinicius Jr. (24), who were named top players for the club in each of the previous two campaigns.
He’ll hope to add to his tally when the Club World Cup commences in June, with Los Blancos drawn in a group with Al-Hilal, Pachuca and Red Bull Salzburg.
The Frenchman finished as the top goalscorer in La Liga this past season, netting 31 times in the competition as Real Madrid wound up second, behind Barcelona. He’s the first French player to win the scoring title in the Spanish top flight since Karim Benzema (37) took home the crown with Real Madrid in 2021-22.
Before the Club World Cup, Mbappé will lead Les Bleus next week in the semi-finals of the UEFA Nations League as they face Spain in a rematch of the Euro 2024 semi-finals, which La Roja won 2-1.
