Kylian Mbappé’s hamstring recovery period is strictly controlled by Real Madrid, his entourage told AFP on Tuesday, amid criticism in Spain over his involvement.
The forward has been out since 24 April with a hamstring problem. He drew criticism from some fans after spending the weekend in Cagliari, Sardinia, a week before the Clasico against Barcelona on Sunday at 21:00.
The trip fell within rest days granted by the club to injured players. Mbappé used the same allowance as Eder Militao and Thibaut Courtois, who were also seen abroad recently.
His camp said some of the backlash stems from overinterpreting elements of a recovery process tightly overseen by the club, and argued it does not reflect his daily commitment to the team.
Criticism of perceived individualism has lingered around the club. On Sunday, head coach Alvaro Arbeloa said Madrid were built on effort and sacrifice rather than glamour, a remark some observers saw as a thinly veiled reference to the France captain’s pressing.
Madrid won 2-0 at Espanyol without him and are now uncertain whether he will be ready for the Clasico. Mbappé has 41 goals in 41 matches in all competitions this season. Arbeloa said they would see how he is this week, adding that tests last week suggested it might take a little longer.
