La Cartuja is again staging a Betis v Sevilla derby, almost 25 years after the only meeting between the rivals at this neutral venue, held in late August 2001. The stadium is currently Betis’ temporary home.

As reported by as.com, that summer brought the I Torneo Estadio Olímpico, a three-team triangular featuring Betis, Sevilla and Athletic Club. It comprised three 45-minute mini-matches played consecutively.

With 43,000 in attendance despite the Seville heat of high summer, the derby was tight and finished 0-0. To avoid sensitivities, both teams wore their away kits.

Sevilla also drew 0-0 with Athletic, while Betis beat the Basques 1-0, so Betis took the trophy.

Sevilla won the tournament the following year, ahead of Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid.

The club have played only one other game at La Cartuja, an official outing as hosts against Real Madrid in LaLiga on 27 April 2003 after an agreement with the City Council. Madrid won 1-3, with Iván Helguera, Zidane and Morientes on target, Paco Gallardo scoring for Sevilla.
