In a surprising yet intriguing development, Croatian journalist Drazen Antolic, as relayed by SPORT, has confirmed that the idea of Ante Budimir joining Real Madrid is more than just media speculation.

He reports that the Osasuna striker is indeed on the club’s shortlist of attacking reinforcements.

At first glance, the idea may raise eyebrows. Budimir, 33, is not the typical Galactico profile associated with the Madrid front line. However, his record speaks volumes.

The veteran forward netted an impressive 21 goals in La Liga during the 2024/25 season, finishing only behind Kylian Mbappe (31) and Robert Lewandowski (27). That kind of output is hard to ignore, especially when it comes at a relatively low cost.

How much would he cost?

Budimir’s release clause reportedly stands at just €8 million for Spanish clubs, which is far less than the €20 million figure previously speculated. For foreign clubs, the clause is only slightly higher at €10 million.

Besiktas have already expressed interest and made contact with the striker’s entourage, but the growing whispers around Real Madrid’s involvement are quickly dominating the narrative.

Why would Real Madrid target a 33-year-old striker when the club is stacked with younger talent? The answer lies in squad planning and the need for dependable depth.

Why would Real Madrid sign Budimir?

Budimir would not be expected to lead the line week in and week out. Instead, he would fill the role previously held by Joselu, an experienced, physical striker who offers a different dimension off the bench.

A “Plan B” option when matches get tight, defences sit deep, or when rotations are necessary.

In this sense, Budimir’s profile fits perfectly. He is a traditional No. 9, strong in the air, clinical in the box, and known for his work rate and tactical intelligence.

His ability to contribute without needing to dominate the ball makes him a complementary piece rather than a disruptive one, ideal for a team where Mbappe, Vinicius Jr., and Jude Bellingham will carry most of the creative and attacking load.
