Ten of those players wore the armband for their countries, with Real Madrid supplying four captains, Mbappé for France, Valverde for Uruguay, Alaba for Austria and Gonzalo for Spain Under-21. Rüdiger is Germany’s vice-captain, with Kimmich first choice. Carvajal recently captained Spain, though he is considered unlikely to be called up again by Luis de la Fuente.

Elsewhere, Lewandowski captained Poland, Sevilla’s Alexis led Chile, Getafe’s Djené Togo and Levante’s Mathew Ryan Australia. Uruguay’s vice-captain is Barcelona’s Araújo. Spain’s captain, Rodri, plays in the Premier League.

Beyond armbands, several LaLiga players were central to their national sides, including Vinicius and the injured Raphinha for Brazil, Vargas for Switzerland, Thomas Partey for Ghana, Güler for Türkiye, and Tsygankov and Vanat for Ukraine. Among heavyweights, Tchouameni, Camavinga and Rüdiger featured prominently, while Atlético’s Argentines Giuliano, Julián, Almada, Nico González and Nahuel Molina started or came on for Argentina, as did Mastantuono.

There were goals too. Mbappé opened the scoring in France’s 2-1 win over Brazil, Valverde converted a penalty in Uruguay’s 1-1 draw at Wembley, and Lewandowski struck in Poland’s 2-1 victory against Albania. Junior Firpo netted for the Dominican Republic against El Salvador, Real Sociedad’s Öskarsson hit a brace in a 2-2 draw with Canada, and Mallorca defender Valjent scored first in Slovakia’s 3-4 defeat to Kosovo. Spain Under-21 beat Cyprus 0-7, with Gonzalo scoring twice alongside Fer López and Joel Roca.

Getafe’s Birmancevic also found the net against Spain, though his goal was ruled out for a prior foul.
