Mason Mount has been a Manchester United player for over a year yet most fans are none the wiser about his best role in the team.

This is Mount’s second season at United and more is expected. The former Chelsea midfielder struggled with injuries last term and never got a proper run of games to cement his place in the team.

United started the 2024/25 season against Fulham without a centre-forward in the starting line-up. This meant Mount earned a start and played in a false nine role alongside Bruno Fernandes.

While Mount’s use of the ball was questionable at times, his work-rate out of possession was second to none.

Erik ten Hag has been asked about Mount’s best role in the team.

Ahead of the trip to Brighton, Ten Hag said (via MUTV):

“Last season he [Mount] was injured, so he didn’t play many roles.

“I think he is versatile, and I think we can use him in more than one position, but it will be more in an attacking position than in a more defensive position.”

Ten Hag become defensive when answering the question, but he too will be eager to see whether Mount can kick on this season. It’s a matter of the player staying fit because I do not doubt that he is an excellent footballer and can benefit the team this season.
