The derby between AC Milan and Inter ended in a 1-1 draw, leaving a bittersweet taste after the late equaliser by Stefan De Vrij.

Tijjani Reijnders opened the scoring at the end of the first half when he hammered a loose ball inside the box into the roof of the net, but De Vrij’s equaliser in second-half stoppage time denied the Rossoneri all three points.

Despite the disappointing ending, Sergio Conceição’s side displayed some real defensive resilience to withstand the pressure for as long as they did, while the woodwork also helped Milan out on three occasions.

Perhaps rather predictably, Inter are the side that look like they commanded the game. They had more possession, shots, big chances, Expected Goals and corners too.

Mike Maignan made some good saves during a second half in which Milan were largely camped in their own half, while there was also some wayward finishing on display from the Nerazzurri.

Derby drama

The derby ended in a draw for the first time since 1 March 2022 (a 0-0 first-leg draw in the Coppa Italia semi-finals). It means that Milan have also taken four points off their neighbours in the league this season.

Three of the 10 goals scored in the derby clashes this season have come from the 89th minute onwards – including two of the last three (scored by Abraham and De Vrij).

Individual praise

Tijjani Reijnders has become the fifth Dutch player to score at least ten Serie A goals for AC Milan, after Marco van Basten (90), Clarence Seedorf (47), Ruud Gullit (38) and Frank Rijkaard (16).

Before Tijjani Reijnders, the last Dutch player to score in the derby for the Rossoneri was Nigel de Jong on 4 May 2014. Tijjani Reijnders is the midfielder who has scored the most goals in the league this season (seven).

Francesco Camarda (16 years and 329 days) has become the youngest player to play in the derby in Serie A in the three-points-per-win era.

Kyle Walker has become the third player to make his Serie A debut for AC Milan in the derby against Inter in the three-points-per-win era, after Alessandro Melli on 20 November 1994 and Giuseppe Pancaro on 5 October 2003.
