York City snatched the National League title with a stoppage-time equaliser at Rochdale, sealing a return to the EFL after 10 years. The finale unfolded amid two pitch invasions and a long delay.

In a wild finish spanning about eight minutes of added time, the visitors earned the point they needed. NY Times writes that few finales have felt more dramatic.

Stuart Maynard’s side had seemed doomed when Emmanuel Dieseruvwe headed in on 95 minutes, sparking celebrations around Spotland. After a five-minute hold-up to clear the first pitch invasion, York launched one last attack.

Ryan Fallowfield chipped to the back post, Callum Howe’s header was pushed out by Oliver Whatmuff, and Josh Stones smashed the rebound goalwards. Tyler Smith blocked, but behind the line, and the assistant’s flag confirmed the goal in a league without goal-line technology.

“It was the biggest emotional rollercoaster I’ve ever been on,” co-owner Julie-Anne Uggla said, adding she cried at both goals. Stones said it was heartbreak, then belief, and that his team never gives up.

Stones’ strike was York’s 16th in stoppage time this season, the crowning moment of a campaign to remember. Footage online appeared to show a clash between a York player and a Rochdale supporter after the equaliser, and it was not clear if any action would follow.

Rochdale’s 106 points have failed to win this division only once in 39 seasons. They must now lift themselves for a play-off semi-final next weekend.
