Lewis Miley struck deep into stoppage time to send Newcastle United into the Carabao Cup semi-finals with a dramatic 2-1 win over Fulham at St James’ Park.

The tie looked set for penalties after Sasa Lukic’s first-half header wiped out Yoane Wissa’s opener, but the 19-year-old midfielder popped up at the near post to head home Sandro Tonali’s late corner and seal a vital victory for the holders.

Newcastle were quick out of the blocks despite Fulham’s early pressure and took the lead inside 10 minutes. Jacob Murphy’s low cross was pushed out by Benjamin Lecomte and Wissa reacted quickest to turn the ball home, marking his first start of the season with his first goal for the club.

Fulham hit back soon after when Antonee Robinson found space on the left and picked out an unmarked Lukic, who powered a header past Aaron Ramsdale to restore parity.

The second half was tight and scrappy, with chances at a premium. Bruno Guimarães and Harvey Barnes both tested Lecomte, while Newcastle saw a goal ruled out for offside as the tension grew.

With penalties looming, Tonali’s delivery in the second minute of added time proved decisive, Miley rising to glance his header into the net and spark huge celebrations.

Marco Silva's side threatened late on, but Newcastle held on to book their place in the last four, where Manchester City now stand in their way.
