Chelsea want to end the season on a high with a win over Sunderland, but there are a few injury doubts for the game.

Calum McFarlane left Reece James out of the Tottenham game on Tuesday night because the injury prone club captain had had to play against Liverpool in the FA Cup final just days before. The interim manager was asked about when we could expect on Sunday in his press conference today.

James to go “day by day” as club continue to manage him

“Reece has trained today,” McFarlane explained.

“We’ll play it day by day with Reece. He’s fit and in good condition but we know we need to manage him carefully. He played a lot of minutes in the final – and that will take it out of you.”

Given his injury history there’s no reason to play Reece if there’s any risk. Equally, it will be more than a week since the final by the time we reach Sunday, and if it’s really a matter of fatigue we’re sure he will be ready to play.

McFarlane also gave an update on two players who missed out on Tuesday’s game against Tottenham.

Enzo Fernandez could be on his way out at Chelsea despite the arrival of Xabi Alonso, with Real Madrid keen to sign him.
