Despite the absence of the Curva Nord ultras, Lazio resumed their Serie A campaign with a valuable 2-0 win over Lecce at the Stadio Olimpico.
Maurizio Sarri only made one change to the starting lineup that lost against Inter Milan at San Siro before the international break, replacing Manuel Lazzari with Luca Pellegrini. Therefore, Adam Marusic reverted to his original role on the right flank, with Alessio Romagnoli and Mario Gila completing the backline.
Matteo Guendouzi, Danilo Cataldi and Toma Basic constituted the midfield, while Gustav Isaksen and Mattia Zaccagni flanked Boulaye Dia upfront.
Lecce thought they had stunned the home side with an early strike, as Riccardo Sottil’s deflected shot wrongfooted Provedel. However, the goal was instantly disallowed for a foul on Isaksen. Afterwards, Lazio took the initiative, beginning with a shot from Guendouzi that was too central to trouble Wladimiro Falcone.
Nevertheless, the Giallorossi goalkeeper then had to produce a miraculous save to deny Dia following a lovely team play that also involved Isaksen and Guendouzi. The Senegalese’s first-time shot looked destined for goal, but the Lecce captain put a foot in the way.
The Biancocelesti eventually translated their dominance into a well-deserved lead. Pellegrini’s throwball found Basic on the byline, and the Croatian scuffed his first touch, but then managed to keep it alive just before going out of bounds. The ball reached Guendouzi, whose off-balance attempt somehow crept into the bottom corner.
Lazio weren’t satisfied with their one-goal advantage, as they kept going forward with real venom. However, Basic’s volley couldn’t beat the goalkeeper, while Dia’s effort was blocked by Kialonda Gaspar. Guendouzi also tried to curl one into the top corner, but it sailed wide, as the first half ended 1-0.
After the break, the Aquile picked up from where they left off. Dia dispossessed Gabriel Tiago before coolly slotting it past Falcone. However, the referee was summoned for an on-field review, and the Lazio striker was judged to have fouled the young Portuguese defender, hence ruling out the goal.
Falcone then produced a superb double-save to prevent Marusic and Isaksen. Afterwards, Guendouzi’s long-range effort was denied by the post. Isaksen picked up the rebound and found Zaccagni, whose effort ominously hit the same post.
While the match seemed to be heading towards a 1-0 win for Lazio, Tijjani Noslin secured the win with a second goal at the death. Provedel’s goal-kick landed in the middle of the park, but the Dutchman managed to win the physical duel against the Lecce defenders and pull off a shot, but Falcone was equal to it.
Nevertheless, the former Verona striker was able to head home the rebound to score his first of the season. With this win, Lazio temporarily climbed to seventh place in the table while awaiting Monday’s results.
