Lazio defender Alessio Romagnoli has been slapped with a one-match ban after receiving his marching orders in last weekend’s Serie A clash against Juventus, reports Il Corriere dello Sport.

The 29-year-old caught the leg of his former Milan teammate Pierre Kalulu with a desperate sliding tackle as the latter was heading towards Ivan Provedel’s goal. While referee Juan Luca Sacchi didn’t notice the contact in real time, the VAR intervened which prompted an on-field review followed by a red card.

Therefore, Lazio were reduced to 10 men as early as the 24th minute, impeding their chances of earning points at the Allianz Stadium. Marco Baroni’s men held on valiantly, but their resistance was brought to an end due to a late own-goal from Mario Gila.

Romagnoli Suspended for Lazio-Genoa

After the end of the Serie A round, the sports judge rendered his decision, handing Romagnoli a one-match ban. This is considered the minimum punishment for a direct red card. The judge also gave the same ruling in Tijjani Reijnders’ case. The Milan midfielder was sent off in a similar fashion after tripping Udinese’s Sandi Lovric while being the last defender.

Romagnoli will thus miss Lazio’s next Serie A encounter against Genoa at the Stadio Olimpico, but will be available for the ensuing contest against Como on October 31st. Baroni will likely deploy the defender in the starting formation in Thursday’s Europa League contest against Twente.
