Lazio already have a ready-made replacement for the injured Gaetano Castrovilli in the shape of Jean-Daniel Akpa Akpro.
As Il Corriere dello Sport (via La Lazio Siamo Noi) explains, the 27-year-old Italian will undergo surgery to repair a knee problem, and should remain out of action between 20 to 30 days, thus leaving Marco Baroni short on options in the middle of the park. Castrovilli isn’t part of Lazio’s Europa League squad, but he’s on the Serie A list.
Therefore, the Roman newspaper expects the club to replace the former Fiorentina man with Akpa Akpro who has been omitted from the squad since the start of the season. The 32-year-old couldn’t seal a move away from the Italian capital last summer, so he remained on the fringes at Formello.
Nevertheless, the Ivorian could make his way back to Lazio’s Serie A list, at least until January when the club will be able to adjust the squad, either by bringing Castrovilli back to the fold, or with a new signing. While fellow outcast Toma Basic was also mentioned as an alternative option, Akpa Akpro is the favorite to get the nod.
The Toulouse native has been on the Biancocelesti’s books since making the move from Salernitana in the summer of 2020. The Ivorian midfielder was part of the Lazio squad for two years, but spent the previous two campaigns on loan at Empoli and Monza.
