Stadio Olimpico sets the stage for a mouth-watering Serie A showdown between Lazio and Inter. Saturday’s clash in Italy’s capital will serve as the final rehearsal ahead of next week’s Coppa Italia final.
Despite being on the verge of suffering their worst Serie A finish since the 2018/19 season, Lazio could still secure European qualification for next season. However, Maurizio Sarri’s men must beat newly crowned champions Inter in the Coppa Italia title decider, with this fixture likely to provide a glimpse of things to come.
With the odds firmly stacked against them, Lazio must defy expectations of numerous football betting sites if they’re to topple the San Siro giants and avenge a 2-0 defeat in November’s reverse clash. Heavily fancied to claim bragging rights here and subsequently secure Coppa Italia glory, Inter head into proceedings in a buoyant mood after dethroning Napoli last week.
In doing so, Cristian Chivu became only the fourth manager in Serie A history to lift the Scudetto before turning 50. The 45-year-old has done a stellar job at Giuseppe Meazza this season, restoring confidence and fighting spirit within a squad that suffered a series of heartbreaks in the final stages of Simone Inzaghi’s tenure.
Despite facing long odds, Lazio can draw heart from winning three of their last four competitive matches (D1), including a come-from-behind 2-1 victory at relegation-threatened Cremonese on Monday. Back at the Olimpico, where they have not lost any of their last five league outings (W2, D3), Sarri’s men will be eager to end a dreadful eight-game winless streak against Inter (D2, L6).
Furthermore, the Nerazzurri inflicted Lazio’s heaviest-ever home defeat in Serie A last season, cruising to a stunning 6-0 victory. Keen to settle the score, the Biancocelesti can take confidence from beating Inter’s arch-rivals Milan at this venue two months ago.
However, it’s worth noting that the narrow 1-0 win against the Rossoneri remains Lazio’s only clean sheet across nine home league games in 2026. A lack of defensive resilience could be a major issue for the hosts here, as they face the division’s most prolific side, with Inter bagging at least 23 more goals than any other Serie A team this season.
As the only side to hit an 80-goal landmark, Chivu’s charges head to Rome confident of extending their eight-game unbeaten run (W5, D3). Yet, the visitors cannot afford to take anything for granted after securing just one win in their last five away games (D3, L1).
Entertainment has been at a premium in Lazio’s Serie A fixtures this season, with a league-low ten of their 35 matches producing over 2.5 goals. Against that backdrop, their last two league outings have bucked the trend, featuring both teams scoring and at least three goals in total.
In stark contrast, 54% of Inter’s Serie A games have seen 3+ total goals, with their last two away matches seeing both sides score at least twice. On that basis, another high-scoring contest is not beyond the realm of possibility, especially now that both teams arrive in a strong attacking form.
