This comes amid an ongoing inquest as to the reasoning behind the frontman’s absence from the latest France squad.

The name of attacker Mbappé has of course positioned itself centre stage in the headlines in his home country across the week to date.

This comes after the 25-year-old was a headline omission from Les Bleus’ squad for the November international break.

Drawn on the subject of as much last weekend, Didier Deschamps provided a somewhat confusing response, in explaining:

“I had discussions with Kylian and made my decision. It’s better this way. Mbappé wanted to come with us, it’s not because of any other problem.”

Faced by the media once more on Wednesday, it therefore came as little surprise when the name of his side’s captain was again put to France’s headmaster.

And, on this occasion, Deschamps moved to defend Mbappé, calling for the French press to ‘leave him alone’, to instead focus their attentions on those to have been called up to face Israel and Italy:

“Why Mbappé out? I already said what I had to say. There are 23 players here and that’s it. Kylian is not here, leave him alone.”
