Sunderland and Celtic have been linked with Lecce left-back Antonino Gallo, but any January move looks unlikely. Solo Lecce reports that the Serie A club plan to extend his expiring deal by one year, then assess a sale in summer.
The report also says Lecce value the 26-year-old at around £3.5m and have already turned down an approach from Panathinaikos.
Gallo joined from Virtus Francavilla in 2020 and has since made 175 first-team appearances, scoring one goal with 10 assists.
Should the situation develop as outlined, Sunderland and Celtic may have to wait until the end of the season to firm up interest.
Elsewhere, any speculative hope of Sunderland landing Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez has faded. Barcelona have agreed a new contract with the Spain international through to 30 June 2031, with the deal to be signed in the coming days.
Sunderland were earlier linked with a £69 million move, although an exit now appears off the table.
