Lee Cattermole has hailed Enzo Le Fée after the Frenchman helped Sunderland past Everton in an FA Cup third round shootout, days after a costly miss at Brentford.

“I think he's been outstanding. He's a class act - his technical ability, but also his off the ball [work]. He works so hard for the team, and the reaction doesn't surprise me at all.” He was speaking on BBC Radio Newcastle’s Total Sport.

The 25-year-old’s week began with a panenka saved by Caoimhin Kelleher in a 3-0 defeat at Brentford on Wednesday. On Saturday lunchtime on Merseyside he swept in a fine volley to open the scoring, then converted the first penalty in the decisive shootout.

After the final whistle, Le Fée said the goal carried extra meaning following the Brentford setback. He spoke of supportive messages from fans and stressed it was important to respond quickly.

He added that his confidence had not wavered and that football is to enjoy, which is why he tried the panenka. Converting under pressure in the shootout, he said, was the perfect way to show he could step up.
