Leeds United have removed derelict changing rooms that bore a tribute mural to Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight, after receiving their families’ support, as part of Elland Road’s redevelopment. Planning permission for a new West Stand was granted by Leeds City Council earlier this year.
The club said in a statement that work began last month with demolition of the West Stand Banqueting Suite, then the former ticket office and LUTV studio, enabling a reduced level dig to the formation level.
Piling will run over the coming months as a corridor is built so the current West Stand can operate at full capacity during the season while a new structure is erected above it. The corridor will separate hospitality, home and away supporters.
A hospitality facility behind the North Stand is ready for fit-out ahead of the 2026/27 Premier League season to serve relocated West Stand clients. Proposals include a second-phase North Stand that would lift capacity to around 53,000 when complete.
The broadcast compound has moved from Fullerton car park to a site across the road from the North Stand. The old changing rooms there, disused since the switch to Thorp Arch, featured a mural to Loftus and Speight, who were murdered in Istanbul in April 2000. A plaque to the pair remains outside the East Stand.
