Leeds United are interested in Tottenham’s Ben Davies, with the defender having entered the final six months of his contract with the north London outfit.

The Welsh international has been a reliable figure for Spurs over the years, and whilst he isn’t in Ange Postecoglou’s best XI, injuries have meant Davies has featured regularly in the past 18 months.

However, fitness problems of his own have also hindered the 31-year-old, who is currently out due to a recurrence of a hamstring problem he initially suffered last month.

Leeds United keen on Ben Davies

Davies will hope to return to action in the coming weeks, but it appears there are doubts about his future, as journalist Ben Jacobs told the Last Word on Spurs podcast that Leeds’ interest in the player hasn’t gone away, after they considered a move for the left-footer in the past.

With Ben Davies, I think that he will also be gone. And the same for Fraser Foster as well. With Davies, the natural thing is to run down the contract. Leeds United remain interested. So that could be one to watch in the coming weeks.”

It remains to be seen whether Davies would entertain a switch this month, as he may have more options on the table as a free agent in the summer.

Ben Davies would be a coup for Leeds United

Davies has been a steady figure for Spurs over the years, and even this season, he has played well when he has been out on the pitch.

In truth, a January move seems unlikely for various reasons from the outset, as Spurs aren’t exactly blessed with a lot of cover in defence, and their injury situation means the squad is stretched.

With Postecoglou’s side still in Europe, and both domestic cup competitions, they will have a hectic fixture list over the coming months, so you would expect the focus for the club is on strengthening the squad as opposed to weakening it.

But, if Leeds can get a deal done, it would make a lot of sense, even if they are flying high in the Championship.

Davies is a top professional, and his know-how and the standards he sets would help the group. Plus, he still has a lot to offer, and his ability to play left-back and centre-back obviously appeals.

Leeds aren’t desperate for reinforcements in that area of the pitch, as Pascal Struijk is a class act at centre-back, and Max Wober acts as cover for both positions - like Davies.

If the Austrian left, the dynamics would change, and most would agree that Davies is an upgrade, so it’s a good deal if they could make it happen, but there’s no panic if they can’t get it over the line this month.

Either way, it would certainly be one for Leeds to explore in the summer, and it will be interesting to see how things play out with Davies.
