Leeds United are exploring an attacking addition in January, with a report linking them to Sevilla’s Ruben Vargas.

Orgullobiri claims Leeds are preparing a £17m bid for the Switzerland international, 27, who has more than 50 caps.

Vargas spent several years at Augsburg, producing 42 goal involvements in 161 matches, before joining Sevilla in January. He has made 24 appearances for the Liga side, contributing 10 goals and assists, and has missed games through injury.

This season he has three goals and four assists in 12 La Liga games, form that has drawn Leeds’ attention.

Leeds face competition. Villarreal had a £13m offer rejected in the summer, and Marseille are also interested. Sevilla are expected to listen to bids as they seek funds.

Leeds ended the summer a forward short after moves for Harry Wilson and Facundo Buonanotte came to nothing. Daniel Farke has at times turned to Brenden Aaronson and Jack Harrison to plug gaps.

Vargas can operate on either wing or as a No 10, which could suit Leeds’ needs. With Wilson in form and probably unavailable, Vargas may be viewed as an alternative.
