Leeds United welcome Newcastle United to Elland Road for Saturday’s evening kick-off, with both teams looking to bounce back from a difficult week.
After a memorable opening-day win, Leeds suffered a heavy league defeat at Arsenal before crashing out of the Carabao Cup in midweek. Meanwhile, Newcastle are still searching for their first Premier League victory after a draw at Aston Villa and a heartbreaking late loss to Liverpool.
This fixture pits two determined sides against each other. Daniel Farke will be demanding a response from his players in front of a famously passionate home crowd. In contrast, Eddie Howe’s Newcastle will be aiming to end a poor run of league form but will take confidence from their superb record against newly-promoted teams.
Daniel Farke is contending with a midfield injury crisis. Key players Ao Tanaka and captain Ethan Ampadu are both sidelined with knee injuries, leaving the manager short of options. However, Jaka Bijol and Sebastiaan Bornauw are both available again to bolster the defence. New signing Sean Longstaff is in line for his home debut against his former club.
Eddie Howe also has significant selection problems. Anthony Gordon is suspended after his red card against Liverpool, while the club is still navigating the transfer saga surrounding Alexander Isak. In midfield, Joelinton has been ruled out, and Sandro Tonali is a major doubt. In better news, Fabian Schär has been passed fit to play. Young striker William Osula is pushing for a start after scoring last week.
Leeds’ season started perfectly with a 1-0 win over Everton, but a difficult week has brought them back down to earth. A heavy 5-0 defeat at Arsenal was followed by a penalty shootout exit in the Carabao Cup to a youthful Sheffield Wednesday side.
The Magpies have endured a frustrating start, taking just one point from two games after a draw at Aston Villa and a dramatic 3-2 loss to Liverpool. However, they have a formidable record against newly-promoted sides, having won their last eight such encounters.
Leeds United predicted XI: Perri; Bogle, Rodon, Struijk, Gudmundsson; Longstaff, Stach; James, Piroe, Gnonto; Nmecha.
Newcastle United predicted XI: Pope; Trippier, Schär, Burn, Livramento; Guimarães, Willock, Ramsey; Elanga, Osula, Barnes.
The match will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Main Event in the UK. Coverage begins at 5pm BST.
