Leeds United’s search for attacking upgrades could sharpen after a mixed pre-season, with Real Madrid signing Carlos Espi and Nicolo Tresoldi reported to be staying at Club Brugge.

Daniel Farke’s side lost 3-2 to Wrexham, then edged Sunderland 1-0 on Friday morning thanks to a Melker Ellborg error, underlining the need for fresh options before the Premier League returns next month. TEAMtalk reports that while Espi was on Leeds’ shortlist, their interest was never serious and did not move beyond a watching brief.

Leeds have added Harry Wilson on a free and signed Tarik Muharemovic from Sassuolo for £34.1 million, yet chance creation remains a concern after last season’s 14th-place finish.

Real Madrid have completed a £21.4 million move for Espi from Levante, beating Leeds and Brighton to the striker. The six foot four forward scored 13 goals in 27 appearances last season.

Tresoldi is reported to have agreed to stay with Brugge despite interest from Leeds, Chelsea and Manchester United. The 21-year-old delivered 23 goals and nine assists in 58 appearances and has three years left on his deal. Club president Bart Verhaeghe has made clear that even a record fee would not change his stance.
