Leeds United’s dream midfield plan if top targets land

Leeds United’s midfield could be reshaped this summer as Daniel Farke’s side look to build on an impressive 2025/26, with arrivals and exits likely to define the unit. Academy prospects are also exploring routes into senior football.

According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, recruitment chiefs hold interest in Southampton prospect Shea Charles, while other options are being assessed. The area is relatively well stocked after five core contributors last season, and Brenden Aaronson also dropped into midfield when needed. The American could face extra competition, with one free agent eyed and another virtually through the door.

Club captain Ethan Ampadu has signed a new four-year deal and remains the cornerstone. The midfield should now be built around him.

Ilia Gruev was a reliable squad option and offers natural cover for Ampadu. Leeds might need to sell a midfielder to strengthen, though other, more profitable, if tougher, routes exist.

Charlie Crew’s loan at Doncaster Rovers did not go as planned. At 20, another temporary move could benefit him.

Anton Stach was outstanding in his debut season in West Yorkshire. Leeds will hope the German only improves with more games.

Ao Tanaka is the difficult call. If the right offer arrives, a sale to bank profit on a £3m signing feels feasible, after an in-and-out campaign and with a new midfielder wanted.

Sean Longstaff could, in theory, be flipped quickly as with Glen Kamara, but his Premier League experience makes him a sensible keep. His energy and forward runs are most similar to Stach.
