Leicester City teenager Jake Evans has joined Northampton Town on loan for the rest of the season and goes straight into the squad for Tuesday night’s relegation six-pointer against Rotherham, taking a place on the bench.
According to LeicesterMercury.co.uk, the 17-year-old forward, who has been in City’s academy since childhood, is joining his hometown club.
Evans became the sixth-youngest player in Leicester’s history with his senior debut last season. Comfortable up front or off the right, he has 14 goals in 21 Premier League 2 matches despite often being the youngest on the pitch.
After signing his first professional deal earlier in the campaign, it was thought he would get Championship minutes this season, as Jeremy Monga and Louis Page have done. He was named on the bench four times by Marti Cifuentes but has not added to the four substitute outings he made under Ruud van Nistelrooy last term.
He now seeks senior experience at Sixfields under Kevin Nolan, with the Cobblers winless in six League One games and one point from safety.
Nolan considers Evans an exciting prospect after more than a week training with the squad and says the player wanted the move. Northampton plan to integrate him gradually and hope supporters will see why he is highly rated. Nolan also pointed to the club’s track record of developing youngsters and described Evans as mature for his age, competitive and at ease in the environment.
