Leicester City grabbed a 1-0 Women’s Super League win over Liverpool on Sunday – with Emily van Egmond’s first goal for the club making the difference.

And it came after Shannon O’Brien was sent off, meaning the Foxes played the last third of the game down to ten players.

Interim head coach Rick Passmoor praised his team’s attitude.

“When you look at their mentality, it was like a monster mentality, wasn’t it?” he said in his post-match interview.

“They really kept in the game. They communicated, they worked really hard together, and then tried to create opportunities – potentially, yes, on the breaks – but I think where we are at the moment, we’re seeing progress with the ball in possession, but what we have is a real positive mentality as a group, and that was evident today.”

He said that his half-time team talk meant they approached the second half slightly differently – but also noted that it’s early in the season and there is more to do.

“It was just a little bit of a tactical tweak, of how we go and engage and prevent them playing or having the ball so much and so easily and putting them under a bit more stress and pressure so we can get a foothold and play forward. We’re trying to change quite a bit of the philosophy and move forward and it will take time.

“Like Gareth [Taylor, the Liverpool manager] will say, today doesn’t define anything, we’re just all working towards being in a better place, in this season and seasons to come.”

Rick Passmoor: Leicester City have great group of fans

Passmoor – who took the hot seat at the end of August following the departure of Amandine Miquel – also praised the contribution of the home fans, who he said helped the team through a tricky first half where Liverpool looked the better side.

“Liverpool came here with a plan, played really really well, we stayed in the game 0 and then the second half, there was a little bit more momentum, a little bit more of a shift, and that was created by the players themselves and the whole squad.

“I think we’ve got to all say here at the King Power what a great group of fans we’ve got that backed us all the way, so they made that extra for us today to get over the line.”

Leicester City’s next WSL match is another tough challenge as they travel to face defending champions Chelsea on Sunday, 21st September.
