RB Leipzig have opened discussions with Harvey Elliott over a possible move, as they identify the Liverpool midfielder as their priority target to replace Xavi Simons, according to Fabrizio Romano. Talks are underway as the Bundesliga side wait to gauge the player’s willingness to leave Anfield.

With Simons leaving, Leipzig are moving quickly. “Discussions ongoing waiting to understand player’s decision,” Romano reported, making it clear Leipzig are serious. Whether Elliott shares their ambition is the key question now.

For Liverpool fans, this is the kind of transfer noise that cuts both ways. On one hand, it is flattering. A club like Leipzig sees Harvey Elliott not as a gamble but as a priority replacement for one of Europe’s most exciting young players. That says plenty about his potential.
But that is exactly why Liverpool should not even entertain this idea. Elliott has grown into a valuable squad option under successive managers. He might not start every game, but his impact off the bench, his versatility, and his technical ability are all highly regarded. He is also one of the few players in the squad who offers both vision and control in tight midfield spaces.
If Leipzig think he is good enough to fill the void left by Simons, Liverpool should be building around him, not selling him off. With the club heading into a new era after a summer of change, players like Elliott offer continuity and homegrown talent that should not be sacrificed for short-term financial gain.
The only talks Liverpool fans want to hear about are contract extensions, not exits. Leipzig can admire from afar. That is where it should end.
