With strong performances and spectacular goals, high-flyer Lennart Karl is increasingly playing his way into the limelight at FC Bayern. Now the 17-year-old reveals who was the role model of his childhood and from which team-mates he is learning the most at the record champions
Lennart Karl is shaking up the Bundesliga this season and even caused a stir in the Champions League when he became the youngest German goalscorer in the top flight. His extraordinary performance at the record champions has also attracted the attention of the national team: DFB coach Antonio Di Salvo nominated the 17-year-old for the U21 squad for the first time.
In an interview with dfb.de, the shooting star revealed how daily training at Bayern, surrounded by world-class players, is helping him in his development. He is particularly impressed by two teammates: „I’m learning a lot from my attacking teammates, especially when it comes to the movements of Michael Olise and Luis Díaz,“ he said.
Nevertheless, Karl was confident that he would go his own way: „Of course you can learn things from others, but you also have to show your own strengths. Working with a coach like Vincent Kompany naturally makes me better every day.“
Karl’s generous playing time also makes integration into the team easier: „I didn’t talk much within the team in the first month or two, but now it’s completely normal for me to talk to my teammates off the pitch as well.“
When asked about his role model, the left-footer has a clear answer: „Since I was a child, Lionel Messi has definitely been my idol. Unfortunately, I haven’t played against him yet,“ Karl adds with a laugh.

It seems unlikely that this will happen – but there is a small chance: national coach Julian Nagelsmann wants to keep an eye on talents like Karl for the DFB squad for next year’s World Cup. And superstar Messi is also said to be still thinking about taking part in the World Cup finals and attempting to defend his title with the Argentinian national team in the autumn of his career.
