Former goalkeeper Dave Watson criticised Sunderland supporters who walked out before half-time during the 5-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest.
“Do you know what [expletive] me off watching that game is that even though it’s a disaster for Sunderland, they’ve had an unbelievable season and at three and four nil the stadium were out,” he said. He was speaking on the Ben Foster podcast. “Honestly, for what they have done that team this year and yes, it was a very very bad night at the office, but them supporters let themselves and that team down on that night. The players let themselves down, let’s not have it wrong, but come on. What they have delivered this season has been unreal.”
Sunderland made a relatively steady start but once Forest took the lead the match quickly unravelled, with the hosts conceding repeatedly before the break. By the 34th minute, Régis Le Bris’ side were 3-0 down and the contest was effectively over.
By the interval, thousands had already departed, and some were home in time to watch the second half on television.
Watson’s playing career was cut short at the age of 28 by a serious knee injury. He did not return to first-team football and retired in 2001, having represented England at youth level.
He moved into coaching and developed a strong reputation as a goalkeeping coach, working at Northampton Town, Oldham Athletic, Huddersfield Town, Nottingham Forest and Birmingham City.
