Liverpool Tracking Mamadou Sangare and Lamine Camara Ahead of Key Summer

On Media Matters for Anfield Index, Dave Davis and Lewis Steele discussed Liverpool’s ongoing midfield plans, with reported interest in Lens midfielder Mamadou Sangare and AS Monaco’s Lamine Camara becoming part of the conversation.

Steele explained that Liverpool are “scouring the market for a midfielder” as Arne Slot prepares for another major rebuild at Anfield.

The discussion came amid growing uncertainty around Liverpool’s midfield depth and possible departures this summer, particularly with Curtis Jones heavily linked with an exit.

Sangare and Camara feature on Liverpool shortlist

Davis referenced reports linking Liverpool with Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara alongside Mamadou Sangare and other emerging targets.

When asked how likely Liverpool are to sign a midfielder of that profile, Steele replied: “For the Ligue 1 midfielders, I would say maybe a 6.5.”

He added: “They’re definitely going to sign a midfielder.”

That certainty reflects Liverpool’s wider squad concerns after a difficult season under Slot, where Steele repeatedly questioned the team’s intensity, control and physical level compared to previous years at Anfield.

Liverpool weighing experience against potential

One of the more revealing parts of the discussion centred on whether Liverpool will pursue younger developmental players like Sangare and Camara or move for more proven Premier League options.

Steele pointed towards Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton as another name under consideration, while suggesting Liverpool’s transfer strategy may be evolving.

“I think five years ago they would have gone with the Ligue 1 option just knowing how FSG work,” he explained.

However, Steele also noted that the last two transfer windows under Richard Hughes have looked “slightly different,” adding: “Maybe his style is a bit different in the more moneyball approach.”

That could influence whether Liverpool prioritise younger talents such as Sangare and Camara or decide experience is needed after such an unstable campaign.

Midfield rebuild may go beyond one signing

Steele also raised doubts over whether one midfield addition will be enough.

“I look at the team now with the midfield options they have and I think they need an extra number,” he said. “So that means if one leaves then you need two to replace him.”

Financially, though, Liverpool may face difficult choices with a winger, defender and potentially a goalkeeper also on the summer agenda.

“There’s a lot of work to be done,” Steele admitted.

For Liverpool, the interest in Mamadou Sangare and Lamine Camara underlines the scale of the rebuild facing Arne Slot this summer. With changes expected across the squad, midfield recruitment looks certain to become one of the defining priorities at Anfield.
