The Tractor Boys are in the mix for a top two spot, but Kieran McKenna’s side will have to overcome the likes of Millwall, Middlesbrough and Coventry City to secure automatic promotion.

The Suffolk outfit spent just one season in the top flight, their first in over 20 years, but a 19th place finish ensured they went straight back down.

Their relegation led to an exodus of talent in the summer transfer window, including Liam Delap, who made the move to Chelsea in a reported £30 million deal.

However, former Ipswich forward Emile Heskey has tipped the club to re-sign the striker, provided they can gain promotion back to the Premier League, given his struggle for consistent form at Stamford Bridge.

Here we use estimated figures from Capology to see how much the 23-year-old earns for the London outfit…

Liam Delap’s Chelsea wages

Delap signed a contract with Chelsea until the summer of 2031 when he made the switch from Ipswich last summer.

That will give the Blues a lot of leverage in any potential transfer talks in the upcoming window, as he still has five years remaining on his original terms.

However, the forward has made just 18 appearances in the Premier League for the Blues, starting on only nine occasions.

Delap has contributed one goal, with Liam Rosenior’s side chasing Champions League qualification for next season, while also competing in Europe’s premiere competition.

The 23-year-old is currently on a weekly wage worth £100,000 as part of his agreement with Chelsea.

He is far from the highest paid player in the Premier League squad, with that distinction going to Reece James and his £250,000 per week salary.

Wesley Fofana earns £200,000 per week, double Delap’s current wages, making him the second best paid player in the team.

Ipswich Town’s highest earners

Ipswich are aiming to earn promotion back to the Premier League, and it’s hard to imagine Delap being open to a move back to Portman Road without top flight football.

The club’s highest earner is currently Dara O’Shea, with the defender receiving £35,000 per week, which is also significantly below Delap’s wages at Chelsea.

Leif Davis is also the top earner at Portman Road, with the full-back receiving £35,000 per week as well, with summer signing Ashley Young joint-second on £30,000-a-week, alongside Azor Matusiwa and Ben Johnson.

The Suffolk outfit would have to improve their wage spending in order to convince him to make a return, or else he would have to be open to a pay cut.

Axel Tuanzebe was their highest paid permanent player in the Premier League last season, with the centre-back earning £40,000 per week.

Delap’s Ipswich contract was worth £20,000-a-week, meaning he received a significant pay increase as part of his move to Stamford Bridge.
