Sacked by Rennes on 9 February, Habib Beye signed for Marseille nine days later, an unusual rebound that took the 48-year-old from sixth to fourth in Ligue 1 and lifted his pay, according to L'Équipe.
He began coaching in 2021 in National with Red Star, leaving in spring 2024 after promotion to Ligue 2. He took over at Rennes on 30 January 2025 on a small deal with the brief to keep them up.
Hired for five months at 90,000€, he triggered an automatic extension, with a raise, by securing safety.
The same automatic clause applied for European qualification. Beye was removed while sixth, a Europa League place, and he argues his severance should run until 2027. The dispute is set to be settled by an employment tribunal.
Rennes formally notified his dismissal so he could join OM, where he agreed an 18-month contract. With only one Ligue 1 stint behind him, he lacks the status of predecessor Roberto De Zerbi, who signed in 2024 for three years on 550,000€ a month.
De Zerbi departed seeking only compensation for his large backroom team, while Beye arrived with three assistants. On 230,000€ per month, he has boosted his earnings but still earns less than his regular starters.
