Lionel Messi and Inter Miami were welcomed at the White House on Thursday, with US president Donald Trump honouring their 2025 MLS title. L'Équipe reports that the eight-time Ballon d'Or headlined the visit.

The ceremony marked the championship sealed on 6 December with a 3-1 win over Vancouver Whitecaps.

During the event, Messi shook Trump's hand and presented him with a signed football.

Trump told the Miami players they had done a good job, then greeted Messi to applause. He said it was a privilege to be able to say what no previous US president had said, welcoming Lionel Messi to the White House.

He added that his son is a big fan of the Argentinian, and also of Cristiano Ronaldo, who has met the 45th and 47th US president several times. Inter Miami are in Washington to face D.C. United on Friday at 22:30.
