Lionel Messi delivered the first World Cup hat-trick of his career against Algeria on Tuesday night, taking his tally to 16 and drawing level with Miroslav Klose at the top of the World Cup scoring chart.
France captain Kylian Mbappé had earlier scored twice against Senegal to reach 14, temporarily moving ahead of the Argentine. L'Équipe notes that Messi then reclaimed the lead over Mbappé later in the evening with his treble.
At 38, Messi is the first player to feature in six World Cups. He now sits above the Brazilian Ronaldo on 15 and Mbappé on 14.
He has at least two more matches, against Austria on Monday at 19:00 and Jordan on 28 June at 4:00, to try to move clear.
His treble was also the first of this edition.
