Lionel Messi opened the scoring against Cape Verde in Miami, netting his 20th World Cup goal to extend his all-time record ahead of Kylian Mbappé. The strike came in the early hours of Saturday.
The Argentina captain ran onto a fine pass from Lisandro Martinez, took a deft touch and finished left-footed on 29 minutes, his seventh in four matches at the 2026 edition. L'Équipe notes it was another landmark night for the 39-year-old.
At Hard Rock Stadium, he also became the first player to score in eight successive World Cup games.
On Tuesday, France forward Kylian Mbappé had closed in with a brace in the 3-0 win over Sweden, taking him to 6 at this tournament and 18 overall. Messi has now pulled clear again of his former Paris Saint-Germain team-mate.
It also marked his 30th World Cup appearance, another record for the forward.
