In a recent report, journalist Graeme Bailey stated that Liverpool are facing stiff competition for Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni. It is understood that the Reds would have to compete with Manchester City and Chelsea in the race to land the Italian centre-back next year.
Bastoni has enjoyed a good run of form at the Milan club after he put in a handful of solid displays for them on the defensive end of the field. The Italian talent has participated in 20 matches for Inter Milan this season, scoring one goal and earning five assists in various competitions.
The 26-year-old has been a decent presence when defending inside his half as he has made 31 tackles, ten blocks, 13 interceptions and 43 clearances in Serie A. He has even been tidy when distributing possession from the back after completing 85% of his attempted passes in the Italian top-flight (stats via fbref.com).
His current contract at the Italian club will expire in the summer of 2028. Thus, it won’t be easy for the Reds to snap him up on the cheap next year.

Bastoni is a good tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to earn the ball back for his team inside his half. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the offensive.
The Italy international can use his strong 1.90m frame to dominate the opposition attackers in the air. He is even proficient at playing his way out from the back.
We can expect Bastoni to bring more bite and steel to Liverpool head coach Arne Slot’s defence. He is more than capable of earning a regular first-team spot at the Merseyside club in the coming years.
At 26, Bastoni has got his peak years ahead of him, which makes him a decent choice for the Reds to consider this January or next summer. He might even help Liverpool compete for some major honours over the next few seasons. All in all, Bastoni would be well worth the fight, so the Reds would be wise to move in for him in 2026.
