In a recent report, Bild mentioned that Liverpool are locked in a three-way battle for Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano. It has been claimed that the Reds would have to rival Real Madrid and Manchester United in the race to land the French centre-back.
Upamecano has enjoyed a solid campaign at the German club as he has been responsible for putting in a string of impressive displays for them on the defensive end of the field. The 26-year-old has featured in nine matches for the Bavarian outfit this season across all competitions.
The French defensive ace has given a good account of himself when defending inside his half and deserves credit for making seven tackles, three blocks, five interceptions and ten clearances in the Bundesliga. He has even distributed the ball well from the back after completing 92.4% of his attempted passes in the top tier of German football (stats via fbref.com).
His current contract at the Allianz Arena will run out at the end of this campaign. Hence, the Reds could potentially sign him on a free transfer next summer.

Upamecano is a tough-tackling defender who can time his challenges well to earn the ball back for his team inside his half. He usually puts his foot through the ball when needed and can even play his way out from the back.
Standing at 1.86m, the German talent is a strong presence in the air as well. However, only time will tell whether he can maintain his good form in the Premier League if the Reds manage to snap him up next year.
Upamecano would no doubt enhance the quality of Liverpool head coach Arne Slot’s defence. He has what it takes to serve as an ideal replacement for Ibrahima Konate, who has entered the final year of his contract with the Merseyside club.
At 26, Upamecano’s peak years are ahead of him, which makes him a decent option for the Reds to consider next year. He would also help Liverpool compete for some major honours over the next few years. Thus, Slot should focus on going all out to recruit him on a free transfer at the end of this season.
