Liverpool facing £50 million disaster

Missing out on the Champions League has several consequences, including players being less willing to agree to transfers, but the biggest loss is financial.

According to UEFA’s financial figures from the 2024/25 season, Liverpool were paid €98.1 million (~£85m) for topping the league phase table and reaching the round of 16.

In comparison, Tottenham received €41.4 million (~£36m) for winning the Europa League.

If the season were to end today, Liverpool would only qualify for the Europa League.

That means that even if the Reds won the Europa League, they would still be set to make a near £50 million loss based on last season’s figures.

Slot’s side have qualified for the round of 16 again, meaning they will likely receive a similar payout to last season, but not qualifying for the competition again this campaign could set the club back for years.

The club are currently in a period of transition, with more high-profile signings expected in the coming transfer windows, but a season in the Europa League would set them back significantly.

Last time the club were in the competition they reached the quarter-finals, the highest earning side who went out at that stage last season were Lazio, who received €24.2 million (~£21m).

The latest release of financial figures from UEFA will confirm to Liverpool that qualifying for the Champions League is a must, and the club’s rebuild could hang in the balance.
