Liverpool have confirmed they will retire the number 20 shirt worn by Diogo Jota following his tragic passing.
The 28-year-old died in a car crash alongside his brother André Silva on July 3, less than two weeks after getting married to his long-term partner, Rute.
There was an understandable outpouring of emotion from around the world of football, with many of Jota's teammates at club and international level expressing their devastation at his untimely death. The vast majority of Liverpool's squad attended his funeral in Gondomar, Portugal, alongside hundreds of relatives, friends and members of the Portugal national team.
Jota's impact at Liverpool will now be immortalised forever after confirmation from the club that they will retire his number across their men's, women's and academy teams—a decision they took after consultation with his family.
“As a club, we were all acutely aware of the sentiment of our supporters – and we felt exactly the same way,” Michael Edwards, FSG CEO of Football, said in a club statement. “It was vitally important to us to involve Diogo’s wife, Rute, and his family in the decision and to ensure they were the first to know of our intention.
“I believe this is the first time in Liverpool Football Club's history that such an honour has been bestowed upon an individual. Therefore, we can say this is a unique tribute to a uniquely wonderful person.
“By retiring this squad number, we are making it eternal—and therefore never to be forgotten.
“As far as Liverpool Football Club is concerned, he will be forever our number 20.”
Jota won two Premier League titles, two EFL Cups and an FA Cup during his time on Merseyside. He joined in 2020 and made 182 appearances for the club across all competitions, scoring 65 goals and providing 26 assists.
