Liverpool are considering the possibility of signing Rennes and France U21 international centre-back Jérémy Jacquet (20), according to The Times’ Paul Joyce. The 20-year-old centre-back has been heavily courted by Chelsea this winter transfer window, but there appears to be a sizable gap between the two clubs’ valuation of Jacquet. Rennes are reportedly holding firm for a €70m transfer fee.
Furthermore, Les Rouge et Noir have no intention of parting ways with one of their key performers midway through the season, and every passing day weakens the possibility of finding a suitable replacement should he were to leave.
Liverpool have only one senior centre-half available – skipper Virgil van Dijk – for their home Champions League game against Qarabag on Wednesday. Ibrahima Konaté is out as his father passed away last week whereas Joe Gomez has sustained a hip injury. A situation, The Times writes, that further highlights Liverpool’s need for defensive reinforcements in the summer. The outlet adds that Jacquet is “under consideration.“
