Liverpool have contacted Florian Wirtz’s representatives to explore the possibility of signing the Bayer Leverkusen star this summer.

The 22-year-old, who is one of the most highly rated attacking midfielders in Europe, is attracting strong interest from Manchester City and Bayern Munich.

Wirtz has not yet decided whether to leave Leverkusen or move abroad, but Liverpool are closely monitoring the situation.

The club’s interest is not new, and their recent approach signals a willingness to act swiftly if the German decides to pursue a Premier League switch.

Man City are also actively pursuing the midfielder and view him as a long-term successor to Kevin De Bruyne.

They have reportedly met with the player’s agent and father to discuss a transfer that could reach £126 million, potentially eclipsing the British record.

Despite that, Liverpool are ready to rival any offer if Wirtz gives the green light to a move.

Wirtz is under contract with Leverkusen until 2027, but speculation about a departure has intensified following another standout season.

He has scored ten goals and provided 12 assists in 30 Bundesliga appearances this term, continuing the form that helped his side win their first-ever league title last season.

The Germany international was also named the Bundesliga’s Player of the Season for 2023-24 and played a vital role in their unbeaten domestic run.

He has been capped 29 times by his country and featured in Julian Nagelsmann’s squad at the 2024 European Championship.

While Leverkusen chief executive officer Fernando Carro recently stated that Wirtz has a ‘very high chance’ of staying, interest from top European clubs remains strong.

Liverpool view Wirtz as a marquee option to strengthen their creative midfield options.

A transfer would not come cheap, with Leverkusen expected to demand a figure surpassing Chelsea’s £115 million signing of Moises Caicedo.
