Liverpool have got plenty of contract issues to solve in midfield over the coming weeks and months.

We are led to believe that Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai are the next big priorities for sporting director Richard Hughes.

The midfield duo are out of contract in 2028 but the club are rightly keen to get them sign extended deals. It will take a sizeable figure to ensure Gravenberch and Szoboszlai sign on - but surely it’s a price worth paying given their importance to Arne Slot’s team.

But there is another midfielder who is due a contract renewal - and his terms expire next year.

Liverpool running into contract problems with Curtis Jones

Homegrown midfielder Curtis Jones last signed a contract renewal back in 2022 - when he was a squad player under Jurgen Klopp.

Since then the playmaker has grown to a central figure in the team as well as a full England international. In an ideal world Liverpool would have signed Jones up for the long term by now but it’s not yet happened.

In fact the club were reportedly entertaining offers for the No17 in the January transfer window - with both Tottenham and Inter Milan making their interest known.

Jones remained but unless a new deal is worked out before the end of the season then it’s highly likely he will be sold.

Hughes won’t want another player running down his deal - like Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ibrahima Konate - and could sell if the price is right.

In the opinion of Liverpool reporter David Lynch it’s all but certain that Jones is going to leave - because Liverpool currently refuse to meet his contract demands.

This is TERRIBLE for Liverpool warns Lynch

“I’ll almost be surprised now if he signs a new contract,” Lynch told Anfield Index. “This interest has got out there, and it is being clearly welcomed by the player.”

Jones has been in and around the first-team picture since the 2018/19 season - and right now is the only local lad in the squad.

“I just think it’s pretty terrible for Liverpool,” Lynch stated. “He’s your only Scouser in the team now. You’ve developed him since he was seven or eight. Is there really not a world where you can give him a contract he’s happy with?”

During the Premier League title win in 2024/25 Jones played close to 50 matches in all competitions. That emphasises his growing role in Arne Slot’s system - and he is on track to reach that number again this term.

“He’s still playing an awful lot of games,” Lynch said. “He’s genuinely useful. He’s not just filling space.

"It doesn’t feel like he’s got his head on getting a contract signed and staying long-term. Liverpool are probably going to have to make a decision in the next 12 months.”

It may be even sooner than that as his transfer value will reduce when he enters the final year of his contract.
