Liverpool are eyeing Michael Olise as a long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah when he eventually leaves the club.
The Reds are preparing for life after Salah, and the Bayern Munich winger is at the top of their shortlist.
“As for Olise, I certainly cannot rule that one out,” Liverpool journalist Lewis Steele said in his Daily Mail Q&A.
“They want a long-term Salah replacement in the next summer or two, and the early noises are that Bayern’s former Crystal Palace star Olise could be right at the top of their shopping list.
“We can’t say too much more than that yet, but he could be one to watch.”
The Liverpool target bagged 20 goals and 23 assists in 50 appearances last term, earning rave reviews for his sublime campaign.
Olise has begun the current campaign on fire, bagging four goals in four appearances. Liverpool are tracking his progress.
Hailed as a ‘cerebral player’ by manager Vincent Kompany, the 23-year-old is the ideal successor to Salah.
He is remarkably consistent and has Premier League experience, meaning he could hit the ground running in England.
Salah’s current deal expires at the end of next season, and Liverpool must start sounding out targets to be ready for when he eventually leaves.
Liverpool may have Olise firmly in their sights, but prising him away from Bayern will be no simple task.
The Bundesliga champions are well aware of his importance and are unlikely to roll over if the Reds come knocking.
Bayern are expected to tempt the winger with a lucrative new deal, a move that could complicate Liverpool’s pursuit.
Liverpool cannot afford to hesitate because once Bayern dig in their heels, they are notoriously tricky to negotiate with.
If the Merseyside giants truly see Olise as the man to lead their attack in the post-Salah era, they will need to move decisively and prepare for a fierce transfer battle.
